Overall renovation of Wandermatte school building in Wabern

New buildings and conversions

The Wandermatte school complex in Wabern was renovated from the point of view of historic preservation and energy efficiency. The interventions in the old building were carefully planned and executed in order to preserve as much as possible of the character of the original facility.

The architecture of the two new buildings, the kindergarten and the sports wing, is in keeping with the existing building. Due to the changed use of the classrooms, structural measures were necessary in the existing classroom wing. The accessibility of the floors with an elevator and facade openings in the basement for more light incidence required various reinforcements to the supporting structure. The load-bearing structure of the new buildings was constructed heterogeneously.

In the case of the sports wing with integrated multi-purpose hall, the basement, the massive elevator cores and the gable walls were built in concrete. From the first floor onwards, most of the visible load-bearing structure consists of a wooden construction. The facades are also made of wood. In the kindergarten, the exposed concrete parapets together with the floor slab form the static and visual foundation of the building. The rest of the construction is also made of wood. The joining of the respective load-bearing structures solid construction / timber construction was an exciting and challenging task for the two new buildings.
