What does an engineer do?

The answer to the question of what an engineer does can be simplified into one sentence: He or she finds technical solutions to technical problems. Whether in the fields of climate protection, energy, the environment, mobility, digitalization or medicine - it is engineers who develop innovative technologies thanks to which the world is changing.

The engineer at Gruner is responsible for creating designs and plans for the construction of buildings, bridges, dams or roads, for example. He/she uses his/her knowledge in the fields of architecture, civil engineering, building physics, building materials science, building construction and statics.

In the course of his/her work, he/she selects the most suitable materials and evaluates which requirements, such as load-bearing capacity, sound insulation, fire protection, thermal insulation or air-tightness, he/she has to take into particular consideration in the selection process.

In order to ensure that construction progresses and that the construction project is carried out according to the engineer's plans, the engineer, as project manager, coordinates the work of the involved experts such as architects, builders, electricians, etc.

The engineer is responsible for the costs of the project and ensures that the project remains within the specified budget. He/she also takes into account aspects of sustainability and energy efficiency during planning and implementation in order to minimize the energy consumption of the planned construction project and to use environmentally friendly technologies or materials.
