Renewal of the Waldenburg Railway

Lots 3 and 5

From 2020 to 2022, the Waldenburgerbahn was completely renewed over the entire length of around 13 kilometers between Liestal and Waldenburg and converted from narrow gauge (75cm) to meter gauge.

As part of this renewal of the Waldenburg line, Gruner AG was responsible for the engineering services for lot 3 with a double-track extension to 1.7 kilometers and lot 5. This includes the project planning and local construction management over a length of more than 2.6 kilometers and the following range of services:

  • Disability-friendly redesign of 2 stops including new stop infrastructure
  • Route and track construction
  • Construction of several retaining walls, partly with special foundations on piles
  • Rock removal and safety measures
  • Construction of two new level crossings
  • Renewal and reinforcement of an existing stream wall and construction of a second stream wall
  • Renewal and reinforcement of existing stream culverts
  • Renewal of cantonal road, partly including cycle path
  • Renewal of municipal road
  • Extensive pipeline work for various pipeline owners

One of the biggest challenges was the tight schedule for the construction work, which required simultaneous work at various locations along the entire route and placed high demands on the construction and traffic phase planning in the narrow valley conditions.

In addition to this engineering work, Gruner AG was able to carry out further work for the renewal of the Waldenburg Railway over the entire length of 13 kilometers:

  • On-site construction management for track construction
  • Environmental management, groundwater monitoring and environmental construction supervision
  • Hydraulic engineering and surveying
