River restoration works in Montpreveyres

In the municipality of Montpreveyres, there was a significant risk of flooding from the La Rochette stream and its two inflows. Due to the potential consequences for the municipality and its surroundings, measures were taken between September and December 2022 to widen the stream and its inflows in order to reduce the risk of flooding. Gruner was commissioned to develop the entire project, from analysing the variants to planning and execution. We worked closely with Prona Romandie SA for the aspects relating to nature and landscape, as well as for the pedological support.

One of the key measures to reduce the risk of flooding was to open up a 100 metre section of one of the inflows. This measure makes a significant contribution to better regulating water volumes and minimising the risk of flooding. By opening up the river, the water flow was improved and more space was created to accommodate high water levels, which is particularly important in times of heavy rainfall.

In addition to the technical measures, great importance was also attached to improving the ecological quality of the river. Various natural and landscape features were created to promote the river ecosystem. These facilities include the riverbank vegetation, which provides an important structure for microfauna. These measures not only promote biodiversity, but also improve the landscape and contribute to the ecological balance in the region.

Another important measure was the construction of a flood roller mill and floating gates above the pipework. These technical installations play a key role in directing the water into controlled channels and preventing it from overflowing its banks in an uncontrolled manner or damaging floating debris from blocking the pipework.

These comprehensive and carefully planned measures have significantly reduced the risk of flooding in Montpreveyres and at the same time strengthened the natural environment.
