Some time ago, the Gruner environmental department decided to collaborate for the first time on a JV+ mandate together with its colleagues from hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, construction management from the Zug site and road construction specialists from the Zurich site. For their part, the employees of the Gruner environmental department were supported by three external specialists in the areas of amphibian and reptile protection, hydrogeology for groundwater monitoring and mire protection.
The new motorway feeder road is intended to relieve the village centre of Bickwil in Obfelden of additional traffic after the opening of the N4 national road. The central element of this project was the construction of an overpass/tunnel in the centre of Bickwil in Obfelden. The project also included a bridge structure, 15 small animal culverts, a stream culvert, two wildlife bridges, a wildlife passage, a cycle path bridge, approx. 4.5 km of amphibian guidance systems, the opening up and revitalisation of the Tobelbach stream over approx. 50 m and the expansion and new construction of cycle paths and roads.
Due to the short lead time of just four months between planning and construction work at the start of the project, planning had to be carried out on a rolling basis and planning and execution had to go hand in hand. Consultation with the relevant environmental agencies and landowners and approval of the implementation plans by the client also had to take place under great time pressure and with correspondingly smooth communication.
In this complex project, we were able to perform a variety of exciting tasks as environmental construction supervisors (UBB for short) and were able to utilise our diverse skills in a wide range of areas to great effect.
Our tasks included the pedological construction supervision (BBB) including the supervision of two terrain upgrades, the ecological construction supervision (ÖBB) including the creation of numerous landscape conservation plans, the creation of ephemeral ponds, a moor regeneration project, the creation of the wildlife bridges, the wildlife subway and the small animal passages.
During the construction phase, the control of invasive neophytes and excavation monitoring, including the remediation of a contaminated site in the area of the moor regeneration and the new road layout of the motorway feeder road, as well as the control of sooty particle filters were three central topics of construction monitoring. We also took care of the proper disposal of construction waste and carried out a partial decontamination.
