Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Allschwil has commissioned Gruner AG with the general planning mandate to construct the laboratory building designed by Herzog & de Meuron on the adjacent plot of land of the H91 research building. For functional, design and economic reasons, the architectural concept provided for a fusion of laboratory and office building G06 into one overall volume. In close cooperation with the client, Gruner AG developed the laboratory layouts and planned the complex building services installations for the laboratory rooms and the technology rooms together with the specialist planners.
The building consists of 3 basement floors, in which the building services, storage rooms and the parking hall are located, and 5 upper floors, which are used as laboratories or offices. The supporting structure consists of concrete slabs on precast columns in the facade area and stiffening concrete cores and columns inside the building. The building tapers upwards. This means that the façade supports are not on top of each other. The forces resulting from the column offsets are transferred into the concrete slab by means of steel inserts in the slab reinforcement. The execution of the formwork as well as the reinforcement of the two coiled in-situ concrete stairs was made possible with the help of detailed 3D planning.
In the new laboratory building 58 laboratories with ancillary rooms, cubicals and technology rooms for chemistry and biology were created in a total of 250 offices, 2 cafeterias and 140 parking spaces.
