Building Information Modelling BIM
Building Information Modelling, or BIM for short, is a new way of designing and constructing buildings. Unlike traditional methods, which tend to be paper-based and reliant on 2D drawings, BIM uses a 3D model to capture all the information about a building. This means that architects, engineers and construction managers can all work from the same model, reducing the risk of errors and making the construction process more efficient. BIM is already having a transformative effect on the construction industry, and it is set to become even more important in the years to come.
Why was BIM developed ?
There are several reasons the advent of technology has digitized the world around us, allowing us to be connected and communicate more easily. However, the construction industry is one of the least digitized industries and it also has a fairly static level of productivity. More and more companies are specializing in different skills and competences, so there is a certain fragmentation of the general industry, where communication between the different contracting parties is more important than before.
How is BIM used ?
Architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms like Gruner have been using Building Information Modeling (BIM) to design and build structures for over a decade. The development of BIM software and a better BIM is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility. It allows architects, engineers, and construction managers to work collaboratively on the same model, which results in more accurate and coordinated designs.
In the past, each AEC discipline would create its own two-dimensional drawings. This led to errors and discrepancies between the different sets of drawings. With BIM, all disciplines work off of the same three-dimensional model. This way, everyone is working with the most up-to-date information and there are fewer errors.
BIM can be used for much more than just creating models and drawings. The data that is inputted into the model can be used for energy analysis, life-cycle assessment, cost estimation, facility management, and many other purposes.
Do BIM certifications or standards exist ?
Gruner is certified by buildingSMART as a trainer, we also have many individually qualified staff who have received buildingSMART certification, you can see the list of those who have chosen to publish their certificate on the buildingSMART website. buildingSMART is the worldwide industry body which is driving the digital transformation of the built asset industry.
Our projects are carried out according to ISO 19650 where the BIM methodology and process is used.
What software does Gruner use ?
There are many software programs that allow users to create BIM models. Some of the most popular programs are Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Navisworks, Bentley Systems MicroStation, Trimble Tekla Structures, Graphisoft ArchiCAD, and Siemens NX Architecture. The software that is used is typically project dependent and is specified right at the start of the project so that all participants in the project are aware.
What BIM services does Gruner offer ?
One of the first questions we ask ourselves is whether a project can be done using the BIM methodology and process. BIM is an integral part of all our design and construction services. This is also the reason you won’t see any contact people at the bottom of this page. Find the service you are looking for, is it the general design a building or a dam or a bridge… then just ask that interlocuter “can we do it with BIM?”
