The situation on the square had been unsatisfactory for years and no longer met today's requirements in terms of traffic safety and open space quality. The redesign project offered the opportunity to significantly improve traffic safety and the quality of the square. Gruner AG's services included all SIA phases from the construction project/authorisation procedure with tendering, implementation project and construction management.
Wielandplatz was transformed into a friendly, attractive and greener place in the neighbourhood that blends in with its surroundings. Where people used to drive on oversized asphalt surfaces, islands of flowers, unsealed paved areas, a drinking fountain and small corners of the square have been created where people can relax for a while. The traffic areas previously occupied by parked cars have given way to continuous and usable recreational areas. Large existing individual trees are supplemented with young multi-stemmed trees without restricting the quality of the open square. The bus stops were rebuilt to be obstacle-free and integrated into the square design - they can now be reached safely without detours. The route across the square not only connects the individual parts of the square with each other, but also accompanies pedestrians to the surrounding facilities, such as the Schützenmatt Stadium or Schützenmatt Park. The remodelling also necessitated various adjustments to the utility lines.
Thanks to the redesign, Wielandplatz remains a place for the neighbourhood, which can now also be used as such. This fulfils the residents' wish for a safe, quiet square that is suitable for everyday use.
