Review of Public Transport Services

Birseck, Basel-Country

A comprehensive review of the existing public transport services in the Birseck region was carried out as part of the preparation of the 8th general public transport performance mandate. The aim of this review was to analyse and evaluate the existing service and identify possible improvements and adjustments. A particular focus was placed on the accessibility gap in Reinach, for which various routes were analysed. Both existing and new route concepts were taken into consideration.

GIS-supported analyses were used to assess the demand potential. These geographical information systems made it possible to precisely analyse current usage patterns and potential demand in the areas under investigation. Based on these analyses, various rough variants for the routes were developed. Each variant was assessed in terms of its feasibility and effectiveness, with both the existing and the new route concepts being included in the assessment.

The evaluation of the rough variants was based on verbal arguments, which meant that the advantages and disadvantages of each variant were discussed in detail. This enabled a well-founded decision to be made on the most promising options. On this basis, two preferred options were developed that were identified as particularly suitable for improving public transport services in Reinach and the surrounding area.

A detailed circulation plan was drawn up for each of the two preferred options. This planning included defining the timetables, determining the required vehicle capacities and coordinating the cycle times. In addition, a cost estimate was carried out to assess the financial implications of each variant.

The services provided by Gruner AG thus included a comprehensive review of the service, estimating the demand potential using GIS-based analyses, developing and evaluating variants, drawing up detailed timetables and carrying out cost estimates. These steps helped to create the basis for well-founded decisions on optimising public transport in the Birseck region.
