Semmering Base Tunnel: Planning work on the "Gateway to Europe" is completed

Thanks to the new Semmering Base Tunnel, it will be possible to travel from Vienna to Graz by train in less than two hours from 2030. As part of the tender process, Gruner recently completed the design for the tunnel ventilation system.

As part of the new southern line, the Semmering Base Tunnel will bring a rapid and safe connection between Lower Austria and Styria. As a "gateway to Europe," as Österreichische Bundesbahnen ÖBB describes it, the tunnel sustainably strengthens the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor in Europe. The Austrian economy remains internationally competitive and freight is increasingly transported by rail instead of road.

Recently, Gruner colleagues in Vienna completed most of their planning work in the area of tunnel ventilation (emergency ventilation and air conditioning of the cross passages). They have been involved in this prestigious project since 2010 and carried out the tender planning for the tunnel ventilation system. Finally, the colleagues visited the tunnel construction site and gained an exciting insight into the current construction work. After an introductory lecture and safety training, they were taken by construction site elevator down a 400-meter shaft to the two tunnel tubes in the Fröschnitzgraben tunnel section. At the foot of the shaft is a large cavern that will later serve as an emergency stop. Gruner thanks the responsible persons for making this visit possible!

Everything about the planning services in detail.
